I purchased an adapter so i could connect it to my external monitor which functions perfectly.
The external monitor is detected but no image is shown.

Mini displayport is not the same as thunderbolt or.
Definitely make sure you use a true thunderbolt cable with a thunderbolt icon on it and not a random old mini displayport cable with a rectangular monitor icon.
I have connected a mini displayport to vga adapter in order to show presentations on different lcd projectors but no image appear.
This is the correct solution for the apple led cinema display.
They have the same connector shape but not the same capabilities.
If you re using a mini displayport cable with a mini displayport display use a third party usb c to mini displayport adapter.
I have tried re plugging the mini dvi display port adapter and have tried using a different monitor with a different monitor cable.
Another question will be whether your macbook pro can actually support a 4k device at full resolution.

If your display has more than one video connection see if using another connection on the display works.
Try using a different cable that you know is in working order.
Check with its manufacturer for compatibility with your mac and display model.
